Introduction to Genetics, Ethics, and Society

🗓 Dates: 2nd–6th June, 2025
🕓 Time: 4:00 PM–6:00 PM (EAT)
💻 Modality: Fully Virtual (via Zoom)

About the Workshop

The “Introduction to Genetics, Ethics, and Society” workshop is scheduled to take place virtually from 2nd-6th June, 2025 (4.00pm to 6.00pm, EAT).

This intensive workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of genetics research. Drawing from an abridged syllabus of a comprehensive spring course, this workshop is designed for anyone interested in genetics, ethics, and society. There are no formal prerequisites.

Course Description

Topics covered include introductions to genetics, bioethics, and the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI); the history of eugenics; diversity in genomic research; community engagement in research; reproductive genetics; direct-to-consumer genetics; forensics; and genetics, policy, and law.

Focus is on examining the past, present, and future relationship between human genetics and society to evaluate the ethical implications of the research we conduct. Students will reflect on their personal roles and biases in order to develop the tools needed to conduct equitable, just, and inclusive research.

Workshop Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will have developed the skills to:

  • Appreciate, articulate, and address ethical, legal, and social issues in genetics research.
  • Understand the historical context and ethical frameworks relevant to genetics.
  • Conduct equitable, just, and inclusive research in the field of genetics.
