The Tanzania Human Genetics Organization (THGO) was honored to participate in the inaugural Global Genomics Education Network (GGNET) Summit held in Bogotá, Colombia from 20–22 May 2026.
THGO was represented by Dr. Siana Nkya and Dr. Mohamed Zahir alongside Dr. Nyanda Elias from the Ministry of Health, representing the Chief Medical Officer’s office. The summit brought together global health leaders, policymakers, educators, researchers, patient advocates, and professional organizations to shape the future of genomics education and implementation worldwide.
A major highlight was the recognition of Tanzania as a leading example of policymaker engagement in genomic medicine, with the CMO office acknowledged during the meeting. Tanzania was also selected as a co-lead for education and training within the Africa region under GGNET, with responsibility for helping coordinate regional mapping of workforce needs and training capacity for genomic medicine implementation.
The discussions emphasized the urgent need to strengthen genomics education systems, develop supportive policy ecosystems, and build sustainable infrastructure for precision medicine and rare disease care across Africa.
THGO is excited about the growing momentum for genomics implementation in Tanzania and the broader region, including discussions around Tanzania potentially hosting the next GGNET Africa meeting in collaboration with government institutions, universities, patient organizations, and regional and global partners.
