Applications open March 31 and close on May 1.

This free certificate-awarding course will equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to educate students on the advances in gene therapy. The course is being offered by ASGCT in collaboration with Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences as part of ASGCT’s goal to provide global audiences with accurate and up-to-date information through educational and training programs that increase awareness and understanding of gene and cell therapy.

Course Structure – NEW FORMAT for 2025

This course is for academic faculty teaching at accredited universities or medical schools in sub-Saharan Africa. The course aims to train faculty with the necessary knowledge and skills to implement gene therapy education into their university and medical school curricula.

This program features a flexible, on-demand format with short, easy-to-follow videos released at the start of the course, along with a suggested learning path to guide participants. Weekly live “office hours” sessions with course experts will provide opportunities for real-time Q&A and community engagement on specific topics. To earn a certificate, participants must complete a pre-test, post-test, and four weekly course assessments, achieving a cumulative average score of at least 70%—with retakes allowed.

Objectives

Participants completing the course will learn:

  1. Methods used in genetic modification of human tissues
  2. Major disease targets for clinical gene therapies
  3. Ethical and regulatory challenges to gene therapies
  4. Limitation and opportunities for equitable access to gene therapy
Outcomes

At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to:

  1. Explain the methods used in clinical gene therapy
  2. Summarize the status of gene therapy clinical trials
  3. Critique the ethical and regulatory issues regarding genetic modification of human tissues
  4. Create educational materials to educate trainees on the current status of clinical gene therapy
Requirements

Participants must complete all pre- and post-tests, view all eight on-demand modules, and complete all four assessments with a score of 70% or higher. Meeting these requirements will result in a certificate from MUHAS and ASGCT.
