The Asante Daktari Blood Donation Camp 2022 was organized by the Malcolm Foundation in collaboration with Muhimbili National Hospital, under the theme “Changia Damu, Okoa Maisha” (Donate Blood, Save Lives). The event took place on 8th October 2022 at Tanganyika Packers grounds in Kawe.
THGO (Tanzania Human Genetics Organization) was invited to participate as a key partner, with representatives including Dr. Anneth David (Treasurer), Ms. Sara Hussein (Events Team Lead), and Ms. Caroline Mushi (Finance and Administration Intern). The camp aimed to appreciate doctors caring for patients with rare diseases and to promote blood donation programs, while also providing a platform for THGO to address the audience on dispelling misconceptions about rare diseases, using Muscular Dystrophy as a case study.
The event was widely covered through live streaming on ZINJIBAR TV, ZCTV, and the YouTube channel of the First Vice President of Zanzibar, in addition to reporting by Zanzibar Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), Brown TV Online, Zanzibar Leo, and Mwananchi newspapers.
The 2022 Rare Diseases Day commemoration was successfully implemented, engaging multiple stakeholders in advocating for patients with rare diseases. Recommendations made during the event have been accepted by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and aim to enhance access to healthcare, education, and other supportive services for patients. Continued engagement with patient groups, private sector partners, and government institutions will further strengthen initiatives such as homeschooling and improve the overall welfare of individuals living with rare diseases and their families.

The event began at 08:00 hrs with a blood donation drive facilitated by doctors from the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS). The drive saw high participation, breaking the record set during the previous year.
The main program started around noon, featuring speeches and presentations from key partners. The guest of honour, Dr. Praxeda Ogweyo, Director of Clinical Support Services at Muhimbili National Hospital, attended the event alongside partners including ASAS, EFM Media, Global Media, TOSOF, NGS, and Magomeni Ice Cream. The camp successfully combined recognition for healthcare providers, public education on rare diseases, and community engagement through blood donation.
