Since its inception, THGO has hosted multiple annual conferences and symposia to provide a platform for human genetics stakeholders in Tanzania and beyond. The 2025 conference is particularly significant as last year THGO marked 5 years since its inception. Over the years, THGO has achieved several key milestones, including:
- Organising the Africa Society of Human Genetics annual meeting in Tanzania for the first time in history, September 2019
- Organising the first national-level human genetics stakeholders’ meeting which led to the generation of recommendations for a ten-year national human genetics agenda, November 2023
- Organizing annual conferences and symposia that brought together genomics experts and stakeholders
- Capacity building to impart knowledge and skills through specialized workshops, such as clinical diagnosis of rare diseases (March 2023, April 2024) and hands-on preprints workshops (March 2024)
- Communicating human genetics research to academic audiences and the general public via journal articles, preprints, journal clubs, newsletters, and research updates to foster knowledge dissemination
- Influencing national and regional policy related to human genetics through stakeholder engagement, policy makers’ engagement, and writing policy papers
- Creating awareness and advocating for human genetics through social and mass media and by commemorating key days in genetics to enhance professional engagement
- Establishing partnerships with public institutions such as the National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Zanzibar Health Research Institute (ZAHRI), Government Chemist Laboratory Authority (GCLA), and Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), and professional societies such as the Tanzanian Oncology Society (TOS)
- Fostering research in human genetics, including proposed nationwide human genome variation projects, rare disease registry, and mapping genomics capacities and resources across the country
- Promoting genetic therapies and providing genetic counseling
