GUIDELINES FOR MEMBERSHIP TO THE TANZANIA HUMAN GENETICS ORGANIZATION
PURPOSE
This document describes the process and criteria for THGO membership.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Any person who is interested in research, diagnostics, therapeutics, education, and advocacy in the field of human genetics or in issues pertaining to human genetics is eligible for membership in the Society, subject to approval by the THGO Executive Committee
RIGHTS OF MEMBERS
Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, a member of the Society has the following rights:
- A member has a right to vote on matters of the Society at the General Meeting.
- To have his/her name in the Registry of the Society
- To be provided with information on the activities of the Society
- To be eligible to elect or be elected to office in the Society.
- To participate in all general activities of the Society
DUTIES OF MEMBERS
It is the duty of all members to:
- Uphold the Constitution of the Society
- Contribute, participate in the activities of the Society, and endeavor to ensure that the objects of the society are met
- To pay all membership fees and subscriptions to the Society as agreed upon.
APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP
- Applications for membership are made by filling this form.
- Applicants will hear from the Society on acceptance or refusal for membership within a period of one (1) month after submission of the application.
- Where an application has been refused, the reasons for such refusal shall be communicated to the applicant.
- The applicant may submit a new application for consideration after a period of one year.
- Every member of the society will be provided with a registration number, and the Society shall keep an updated registry of its members.
TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP/READMISSION
Termination of membership
Membership to the Society will cease in cases of:
- Death of a Member
- Official resignation in writing from the member to the personnel responsible for membership in the Executive Committee (membership_secretary@tshg.or.tz) three weeks in advance.
- Subscriptions arrears for two consecutive years
- Conduct by the Member that persistently or seriously undermines the aims and objectives of the Society; consistent prejudice on the status and interests of the Society; subject to expulsion recommendation by the Executive Committee and approval by the General Assembly. The Member in question will be given thirty days’ notice in writing of such misconduct, within which he should submit a written statement of defense or explanation to the Executive Committee on the alleged misconduct. If the Executive Committee is not satisfied with the explanation or the Member fails to submit one at all, he/she will be suspended and the recommendation for the final ruling submitted to the General Assembly.
READMISSION TO MEMBERSHIP
Any member whose membership has been terminated for alleged misconduct as described above may be readmitted to the Society by a resolution of the General Assembly upon application for readmission to the Executive Committee, PROVIDED that at least two years shall have elapsed from the date of expulsion.
